Asked by: 3467 views Instrument Rating

I am in the process of completing my private pilot rating (awaiting funding/financial aid which may not come until fall semester). Can I complete the Instrument knowledge exam before I complete my private rating?

Yes. According to 61.35: “(a) An applicant for a knowledge test must have:
    (1) Received an endorsement, if required by this part, from an authorized instructor certifying that the applicant accomplished the appropriate ground-training or a home-study course required by this part for the certificate or rating sought and is prepared for the knowledge test”

Not only you can but it will probably give you a better understanding of many of the materials covered during your private pilot school. My company offers a great Virtual ground school to help you pass the written exams take a peak at the Free Instrument Demo at

to see if it works for you.
