Tracking Student Progress

How do other CFIs track their student's progress towards a certificate or rating?  My fbo is pretty basic.  I've got a paper folder for students and it shows the tasks they've accomplished, but would like to see if there's an app or something more sophisticated available.

    Check out http://mypilotlicense.com

It’s an online gradebook & student portal that lets students & CFIs collaborate on the flight training process.

This is something I’ve struggled with for a long time. I started with paper student folders, and then tried to modify Business Contact Manager. I finally built an app called My Pilot License. I’m actually just finishing it right now, and looking for some flight schools to test it out and provide feedback to me on how it works. Please visit my site. http://www.mypilotlicense.com and sign up to be part of the “Pilot” program.

Nancy, it sounds like your school is using a version of the Jepp “horseblanket,” with a spreadsheet-like presentation, or one of the copies done by other companies.

When I was teaching regularly, I put together an Excel spreadsheet that worked on the same concept. There might be things more technologically sophisticated but the general idea of a visual depiction that can tell you at a glance what’s been covered and what my not have been done in t along time and needs review, is hard to beat.

It’s been a long time, but my old Tripod site (must be close to 15 years at this points) till seems to be up. Sorry in advance for the pop-up ads but if you want to download the spreadsheet and take a look, it’s at http://midlifeflight.tripod.com/cfi_stuff/index.htm

I’ve a folder system that’s quite comprehensive. It allows detailed tracking lesson by lesson as well as a macro format to track overall progress. Pretty simple to pick up and run with, but will require the purchase of some form of folder.

    Personally I use: http://www.amazon.com/Globe-Weis-Pressboard-Fasteners-Expansion-616F21-3BLU/dp/B000FDPEH6/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1365105806&sr=8-15&keywords=legal+folders

My website is http://www.eft12275.com E-mail me at bkonsko@gmail.com if you’d like log in information and directions to how and where to print out the information for these folders.
