Two fold. For one it let’s the pilot trim away pressures on the controls and is a pilots best friend; especially on long flights. Second it’s design is what determines the pressure feedback (balance of the control surface) the pilot gets. Poorly designed tabs give either too light a control feel and make it easy to over control or too heavy causing excessive work for the pilot.

Keep in mind, for you as the pilot what you need to understand is it’s use in trimming the aircraft. Learning proper trimming techniques is difficult at first, but an essential task for any pilot. Don’t fly the trim, fly the airplane. When you are satisfied with the result, hold the aircraft attitude steady and trim away any control pressures.
