Airport Marking (Runway Remaining)

Asked by: 1919 views FAA Regulations

Hello,
I'm currently working on an aviation master's degree, and I'm researching airport markings for my final report and have some questions about the 'runway reaming sign.'

According to FAA / AIM 2-3-13, 'The last sign, the sign with the numeral "1" will be located at least 950ft from the runway end'. For example, with a 6,900ft runway, whenever we saw the sign '1', 950ft runway remained. Because at least include the number.

However, according to Jeppesen United States Airport Sign Systems, 'The distance remaining maybe 50ft less than shown on the sign'. And they used an example of a 6,900ft runway and used a picture to explain that the remaining sign '1' will indicate a 1,450ft runway remaining.

So, 950ft and 1,450ft are huge differences in aviation, as you know. I think the words 'at least' and 'less than' can confuse everyone.

Could you guys please verify the information and let me know the right answer for me?

Thank you.

If you are working on an Aviation Masters degree, you should become familiar with the FAA advisory circulars and FAA orders. That and google.

Airports are in the AC 150 series.

I think you will find what you are looking for in https://www.faa.gov/documentLibrary/media/Advisory_Circular/150-5340-18G-Chg-1-Airport-Signs.pdf
