What is the purpose of the 'Directional Gyro' (DG) mode in an AHRS and when would this mode typically be used?

Thanks

Sometimes AHRS can be confused by metal/magnetic fields. The departure end of RWY 3 at KLGA can have this effect because of the metal used to extend the runway. Gyros won’t be affected by this. Once airborne, you can switch back to AHRS.
