Choosing an E6B app for iphone/ipad

Asked by: 11855 views General Aviation

I know some of you don't agree with new tech stuff like having an app do what the plastic E6B does, but reality is that it is faster and easier.  Can mistakes be made with it? Yes of course.  Can batteries die and you forget how to do the protractor? Yes.  But there are similar arguements to be made on the other side, if you have tons of charts and piles of weather read outs will you be able to readily make calculations? No.  So like everything there is a give and take.  My point being, I am not looking for people to tell me to to carry the old school protractor, I am looking for people who have experience with one of the apps as there seem to be 30 and interested in their feedback on it.  Thanks.

I like Wing X and Garmin Pilot for iPad mini as these come with an E6B and complete EFB with moving maps and airport taxi diagrams along with weather tools. Cheaper than overpriced Garmin 795/696 handheld units too.

All of the EFB apps for tablets do similar things. There are differences but those tend to fall into the personal preference category. Once you get past whether the app works and whether it will be here tomorrow, it’s all about which app is the easiest one for =you= to work with.

All of the apps give you a free trial period. My advice is to take advantage of that and decide which ones you like. I’m a ForeFlight user but as much as I like it, I still look at others as my renewal period comes along.

Right now, the most popular apps for the iPad are Foreflight, WingX Pro and Garmin Pilot (in no particular order). For Android tablets it’s Avilution, Naviator and Garmin Pilot.

FWIW, although I still personally lean toward ForeFlight, the Garmin app has two specific plusses: (1) it’s multi-platform – operates just about equally well on iOS and Android. (2) It uses the same general display and flow as the new Garmin IFR touchscreen GTN 650 and 750 units, which could make a significant difference in some people’s learning curve.

BrilliantConcept.net has a freebie for iPad called iE6B. It’s an E6B only, so it’s a foreflight supplement at best. i’m more or less still in testing mode on it personally, but so far so good.
