Instrument Proficiency Check

Asked by: 4417 views FAA Regulations, Flight Instructor, Instrument Rating

Can an IPC be done and signed off (in a C172) for a pilot before he starts/completes a BFR, if he is also not current on the plane (C172 wasn't flown for over 2 years)? Do not want to use a SIM as part of the IPC.

If so, what about the PIC time?

Thanks!

Yes. An IPC can be completed while the pilot is not current with a flight review. However, they cannot use their new freedom until the flight review is completed.

Logging PIC time and acting as pilot in command are too separate concepts. The training pilot can log PIC in accordance with 61.51(e) but the instructor will have to assume the role of acting as the pilot in command…. meaning he has the final authority over the flight per 91.3.

Wes is correct. The question I have is: if you need both an IPC and a FR, why not combine them? There is bound to be some overlap, there’s no requirement than a FR be VFR, and combining the two will take less time overall than doing them separately.
