Ground Operations Etiquette

Asked by: 3507 views General Aviation

I'm looking for some advice on airport etiqutte so I'm not one of the boorish people.  I know there are many things that a considerate and professional pilot would do not because the regulations require but because it's the way things should be done.  In particular I''m talking about arrival, ground operations, parking, tie down, use of pilot lounges, courtesy cars etc at uncontrolled airports.  Most of my experience is with military bases or airline operations so I'm kind in the dark about some of these things.

When in doubt, call ahead and ask. (Even if not in doubt, that’s a good idea becuase things can change from day to day).

Some questions to ask when you call:
1st. Do you have (or is there for sale) fuel? When is it available (i.e. the time of day they are open)?

2nd. Is there transient parking? Where? Where should you tell the ground controller you want to go? (you might need to make a reservation or just let them know when you are coming so they can have a spot available).

3rd. (if you’re picking up/dropping off passengers) Where do I tell the passengers to meet? Do you have ground transportation (taxi, rental car, etc.) avaiable (or nearby)?

At a small operation, they might have a “courtesy car” that you can use to go into town for a bite, if you return it full of gas, or for some other courtesy. But just ask ’em.
