Logging Flight Time

Asked by: 6688 views Flight Instructor

I just endorced a student for his first solo flight. I gave him .5 duel instruction and loged it in his log book before he soled. I also gave him credit for .4 houres of PIC time for his solo flight and filled his log book out to reflect that. My question is how should I fill my log book out as to the flight time he actually soloed. Am I technically PIC while he is soloing? What entry should I make in my log book as an instructor?

Well, he was the sole manipulator of the controls of the aircraft and the sole occupant of it as well. You can’t be the PIC of an aircraft if you’re not in it, can you? You would log the 0.5 hrs. as Dual given and he would log his 0.4 hrs (solo) as Pilot-in-command.

First, duel instruction would involve swords or pistols.  Dual instruction is what you give in an airplane.

In what world would you think that you could log PIC (or any other time) while not actually in the airplane?

You should make a notation somewhere (it doesn’t need to be in your logbook) that you endorsed a student for solo.  This is required to comply with 61.189(b)(1).

    Nice Kris…
Randy…I suggest a thorough review, I don’t know if you’re inexperienced (you should know this even if you’re a fresh CFI) or if it’s just been awhile since you’ve instructed and looked into the regs but I would spend some sleepless nights reading through the FARs…that’s something you just have to know!
As the others said you can’t log any type of flight time when you’re not flying… all you can log is the dual you gave prior to his solo flight (you can log it as PIC and dual given in your logbook, dual received in his), and your student would log the time as PIC from the moment you hopped out of the airplane and sent him on his way.
Contact me if you need any help, I earned my CFI rating 3 years ago and have been instructing since, so everything is still fresh and recent!
    Cheers!
