Desire to Learn, but unsure on details

Student Pilot

I have a friend who has well above 1500 hours under his belt.  He's offered to teach me to fly since it's my passion. Long story short, I can't join a place to train properly for a career since I'm a single mother.  I'm not willing to be away for the minimum 1-2 years in order to learn and do the internships to make a career out of flying so I deciding to learn recreationally.  This being said, I asked my friend if he is certified and I'd be able to log my hours with him as my instructor.  He said he only needs 250 hours to qualify as an instructor and I'd be ok to log my hours.  This is why I'm writing.  That doesn't sound right to me and I definitely don't want to waste money flying and loggin hours that won't count towards my licsenses when taking the examinations.  So, the question is can I still log my training hours flying with an experienced pilot who isn't officially certified as an instructor?

Not technically. He/She needs to be a CFI, CFII, or MEI depending on what type of instruction your are receiving. Then he would be able to sign your logbook indicating the time flown as dual receivied. However, flying with him is a good thing that should help you if you choose to attain your private pilot license. Safe Fyling!

Thank you everyone for all your input.  I’m now in the process of trying to convince him to take the exams to become CFI lol.  I can’t wait to get started, whether I learn with my friend, or actually choose a school!  Blue Skies!! 🙂

If your friend is not an authorized instructor then they cannot provide you with any of the required instruction called out in the regulations in order for you to apply for a pilots certificate.

They surely can teach you to fly, and you can surely keep track of that in a logbook. But if you want a pilot certificate then eventually you’re going to need one of those pesky authorized instructors.
