instrument approaches and currency

Asked by: 31921 views FAA Regulations, General Aviation, Instrument Rating, Private Pilot

i have recently passed the date where I need to accomplish my BFR.  unfortunately, my date for an IPC is also fast approaching.  If I have an instrument rated safety pilot, can I log the proper amount of approaches necessary to avoid taking my IPC?  thanks

Are you asking if you can maintain your instrument currency although you cannot act as PIC because you need a flight review? If you do not meet the requirements for acting as PIC because of 61.56, another pilot must be able to act as PIC. As long as the flight is operating under VFR and conditions are VMC, the safety pilot doesn’t need to be instrument rated, but they must meet all the requirements to act as PIC and must act as PIC for the flight(s).  If the flight is conducted under IFR, regardless if the conditions are VMC or IMC, the safety pilot must have an instrument rating and be qualified to act as PIC in the aircraft and must act as PIC. For you to not require an IPC, you must log the approaches, holds, and navigation prior to the expiration of 12 calendar months since you were last current.  In order for you to act as PIC under IFR, you have to have completed your flight review or equivalent, have a current medical, and a currency for your approaches, etc.
