Clearance Delivery

Asked by: 25156 views Aircraft Systems, General Aviation, Student Pilot

Okay, so my instructor just turned me loose on doing the radio calls and stuff. And I got it all down pretty good except for the intial contact to clearance delivery. I know the format is "Who, Who, Where, What." It's easy when you're talking to the tower and you're like "Tower, Cessna 234, At 34L, Ready for takeoff." But when I call clearance I'm like "Clearance Delivery, Cessna 234,... and that's all I get too. Can anyone help me out on this last part?

The sequence is pretty much the same whether you are flying VFR or IFR:
Who you are addressing (Allentown clearance.)
Who you are ( aircraft ID)
Where you are (on the airport or which airport in the event you are remote from the control facility)
What you want to do (VFR to…. with Information x) (IFR to … with information x)
You should ensure that you are ready to copy down your clearance instructions, however simple or complext they might be.  If you are not ready, do not call them yet.

    Try this:

    VFR:

Clearance Delivery, Cessna 234 at Favorite FBO with information charlie, VFR to the West, requesting 3,500′

    or IFR:

Clearance Delivery, Cessna 234 at Favorite FBO with information charlie, to Delta Sierra Mike (DSM).

For help with the readback, my fellow aviation blogger Patrick has some good tips for copying your VFR / IFR clearance like a pro that you should definitely read.

The key is practice!  You can use ATClive.net or listen to a bring a portable VHF transceiver out to the airport to listen while in the FBO.

Also, you can purchase Pilot’s Guide to Radio Communications in our store which also contains some helpful tips for radio communications

One additional thing that will help slow the pace is to state at the end of your transmission “Student Pilot”.

Side note – Clearance Delivery really doesn’t care where you are parked (FBO), thats a Ground Control function. Now, they DO care where you are if you are calling them from a satellite airport through a remote outlet.

Example: “Clearance, 606GA to Teterboro with Mike [ATIS]”
