Helicopter flight school

Hello, I am an undergraduate student in Philadelphia, and I am excited to say I have decided to pursue a career in helicoptor aviation. I am very interested in the myriad of career opportunities available to certified helicoptor pilots (transport, search and rescue, film/TV, etc). I really want to be on the California coast for flight school. Your Q&As have helped me to find valuable information on the decision process for aviation schools!

I was wondering if you had any specific advice for my helicoptor flight school search. Are there any flight schoosl in particular that you would recommend if I am seeking a high-quality aviation institution with good connections in various helicopter career paths?

Thanks!

Best wishes,

Parker

    Parker,

The best advice I can give you is visit as many schools as possible in person. You’re gonna be spending alot of money with whoever you decide to fly with, so like buying a car “never buy the first car you see”.
Most flight schools offer an “introductory” or “Discovery” flight, this is a discounted flight rate and gives you an oppertunity to see the school, aircraft, and instructors.
After your flight, make sure you get a log book and have the instructor sign the logbook. After you visit a few schools, you’ll be more able to make a comparison between schools.
Just remember, never pay for anything in advance (pay as you go) and don’t believe anyone who “guarantees” a job upon completion of their training program.
In the end, go with you gut! Usually you’ll make the right decision, but again…. visit as many schools as you can.

    Best of luck to you!

    Parker:
If you are planning a career in the helicopter industry I would suggest three things to consider in choosing a flight school.  #1 Training at high desinty altitudes; #2 Training in Mountainous Terrain; #3 Training at a school that also does real world commercial operations.  Getting your ratings from a reputable school is the easy part.  Getting your first job in the industry (flight instructor or otherwise) and building your 1000 hrs PIC is the tricky part.  Getting real world exposure to commercial operations, and doing your first 1000 hrs in a high DA mountain environment will really set you apart in the stack of resumes competing for those entry level jobs.  If moving to a mountain school is not an option for you, check out HeliStream in Southern CA.  I started my training their and they are great Robinson school and run a lot of turbine operations as well.
