When is it “night”?

Asked by: 15647 views , , , ,
FAA Regulations, General Aviation, Student Pilot

I know position and anticollision lights are supposed to be on from sunset to sunrise, but what about the currency requirement to carry passengers at night? (3 take offs/landings to full stop in same type) Does this time fall under the "1 hour prior to sunrise/1 hour after sunset" category or is it the "morning/evening civil twilight" category? Which of these time periods should be logged as "night"?

The standard definition of night is civil twilight, this is when you log the flight as night.

Nav lights are required sunset to sunrise.

1hr after sunset to 1 hr before sunrise is for night currency.

For pilot operations, night time is dusk through dawn, so the position lights and carrying of the passengers. (part 91)
For currency/pilot training purposes, night time is 1 hour after and 1 hour before (to make sure it is really dark enough for you to train/demonstrate) (part 61).
Logging of pilot time (or PIC time) at night is under part 61 as well, so 1 hour after and before….
    Hope this helps.
