121 RVR

Asked by: 5680 views FAA Regulations, Instrument Rating

I got an interview with an airline coming up and I'm trying to make sure i understand everything there is on RVR and takeoff and landing minimums. I understand the 1600 = 1/4 mile etc part but im just hoping to hear if there is anything outside of the part 91 rules that apply to 121.

Thanks

What specifically are you asking?  There is quite a bit of information related to RVR and T/O minimums.  I recommend reading the Instrument Procedures Handbook before your interview and get a good feel of everything they could ask you related to these operations.  Best of luck on your interview!

Most of your 121 RVR issues are going to be in the Ops Specs – and you’re not really going to be expected to know that on an interview.

You will need to know ALL about instrument flying of all parts however.

Here is something a lot of guys miss: tower reported vis/RVR during approach.
If the RVR/vis is below the minimums, then you cann’t pass the FAF. BUT, if you are past the FAF, you are legal as long as you have that list of 9 things to land (RWY, RWY markings, etc).
I had a guy show me a SMGCS taxi chart for ATL. He asked if the RVR is 500 can we takeoff??  I said no because TO mins if 600 RVR.  He asked if we could taxi.  I said NO, becuase the SMGCS chart was for 1200 to 600 RVR .
Also, just look at the interview gouge, they rarely deviate from that because they need to measure everyone the same.

    GOOD LUCK!

p.s. They will expect you to know something about RVR, but like it was already said, its in the ops specs.  If you do not know the RVR stuff, explain it’s in the ops specs and you will be sure to look at it!
