Does my instrument checkride count for my BFR?

Asked by: 19247 views , , , ,
FAA Regulations, General Aviation, Instrument Rating, Private Pilot

I got my PPL on in August of 2009, so my BFR would be due this August.  I just did my instrument checkride on May 10th.  Does this start to 2 year timer over? ie, would my BFR now be due May 2013?  On a related note, is the BFR 2 years from the exact date or 24 calendar months?  If you could list the FAR regarding these topics it would be appreciated.  Thanks!

The FAR concerning flight reviews is 61.56.  The regulations is for 24 calendar months and starts in the month in which you received the flight review.

In your case, you received the flight review in May 2011 and it will expire at the end of May 2013.

    Specifically, 61.56(d) applies here:

    (d) A person who has, within the period specified in paragraph (c) of this section, passed a pilot proficiency check conducted by an examiner, an approved pilot check airman, or a U.S. Armed Force, for a pilot certificate, rating, or operating privilege need not accomplish the flight review required by this section.

Your instrument rating checkride is “conducted by an examiner” and is “for a rating” – So, while you technically didn’t actually receive a flight review, you don’t need a flight review until the end of May 2013. (Minor nit, Wes. 😉

Yes, all pilot rides automatically “count” in that sense; Instructor rides do not automatically count (but can…)

Good point Micah – Since a flight instructor checkride is for a flight instructor certificate/rating and not a pilot certificate/rating, it does NOT automatically count. But, after the ride you can ask for a BFR signoff from the inspector/examiner.
