    Rachel,

     

    That’s a really big question.  I would refer you to the Instrument Flying Handbook, Chapter 3, Flight Instruments.  The FAA has the entire book on its website at http://www.faa.gov/library/manuals/aviation/instrument_flying_handbook/ and you can get directly to chapter 3 by going to: http://www.faa.gov/library/manuals/aviation/instrument_flying_handbook/media/FAA-H-8083-15A%20-%20Chapter%2003.pdf .

     

    Read thru this and if you still have specific questions, I would suggest you ask them one at a time, so you can narrow the scope of the question to something more manageable.  Also, if you are working towards your instrument rating, you will want to read thru the entire manual.  Good luck in your study.
