Spin in IMC

Asked by: 1037 views Aerodynamics, Flight Instructor, Instrument Rating

Hello everyone?

Scenario, you enter a spin in IMC with your Cessna 172 that equipped with turn coordinator, which instrument would you use to check the direction of the spin and for the recovery?

1) turn coordinator (the needle itself) or

2) the slip and skid? Aka the ball

Thanks for the help

It’s been years since I taught aerobatics. But as I recall, in an upright spin the needle/airplane will indicate the direction of rotation. The ball may be either direction and it seemed to depend on where on the panel the indicator is installed.

    Hello Jeff,

Thanks! From your comment I assume the ball (slip and skid) will be unreadable.
I also remember that the ball is not reliable but I wasn’t sure and I tried to look for the reason “why” and couldn’t find any.
