    This will vary greatly. You can probably expect to fly at least one approach under the hood to show that you are capable of doing it from the right seat, but past that it’s going to really vary by the DPE. You best bet is to talk to other recent CFIIs, or just ask the DPE directly.

    When I was training for my CFI-I, I was under the hood the whole time like an initial instrument student would be, unless I was vectoring my “student.”

    But on my actual checkride, the DPE didn\’t make me go under the hood at all and flew a hold and an approach as I was teaching him.
