ATP (As I understand it), starting with a question:

Do you have a type rating now that you want to use on an FAA ATP? Or, do you “just” want the ATP Certificate for some other reason?

    • FAA Private certificate under FAR 61.75 as the base for the eventual ATP

    • Flight training visa

    • Fingerprints for TSA

    • FAA Medical

    • Actual FAA IFR rating (not 61.75)

    • ATP CTP Course (30 hours in a classroom, 10 hours in a sim); required for written test

    • Multi-Engine ATP knowledge test

    • Practical test (Can be in a light twin or in a sim as part of a type rating if planned properly)

If you have a 737/small Airbus type rating and experience, and you want that type rating on the FAA certificate, you can find a school that does both the ATP CTP course and offers the same type rating you already have. Your experience reduces the training time. If the ATP CTP course sim is the same as the type rating sim, so much the better. The type rating and ATP would be the same checkride.

    ******
There is no conversion process for CFI. Knowledge and practical tests and associated training required.

I am not an ATP, but I follow a forum where this topic comes up often. I have helped many people at the private airplane and glider level convert to FAA under 61.75.

    Good luck!

See 61.153(d)(3). You may use your foreign ATP as a basis for a U.S. ATP without first getting a Private under 61.75 and then an Instrument rating and Commercial pilot certificate.

It is not a conversion, but is easier and less expensive than going the other route.

Kris is correct – the private/instrument are not required for foreign-ATPL-to-FAA-ATP. I can’t edit my answer to reflect that.
