    Yes. A flight review is only required to “act as pilot in command.” The regulation says so. So long as the pilot being trained is “acting as pilot in command,” and you are not, you do not need a flight review.

    There is a potential downside if something untoward happens and you *take* command. The FAA has been a bit funny (funny weird, not funny ha ha) about situations in which they have said a CFI has assumed the command role. But if something untoward happens CFIs are likely to be held responsible regardless of formal command role.
