Instrument training books

Asked by: 1346 views Instrument Rating

I'm getting back into flying and want to complete my IFR training. I have the hours but need to relearn the material to take the test. The FAA has two books out right now. Do i need them both. FAA-H-8083-16B Instrument Procedures is the newest but 8083-15B Instrument Flying handbook is kind of what we learned off of back 80's.

Thanks, Robert

They are different books with different purposes.

The Instrument Flying Handbook is, broadly about how to fly the airplane with reference to instruments. What the instruments mean and do, and how to control the airplane.

The Instrument Procedures Handbook is all about the approach and departure procedures themselves – what the charts mean, what the terms are, a bit on how they are designed, etc.

You should have them both – fortunately they are both a free download from the FAA’s web site.

You should also be familiar with all of the References listed in Appendix 9 of the ACS. Risk management and flight in icing conditions are being emphasized right now, so be extra familiar with those publications.
