GPS or VOR for Instrument training

Asked by: 1457 views Instrument Rating

I just started working on my Instrument rating.

My Cessna 153 needs new radios.

I plan to install a Garmin 430W and two Garmin G5s for the main radio.

I'd like your suggestion for a back-up Nav/Com.

Would you suggest a Garmin 250XL (gps), or a Garmin SL30 (vor)?

THANKS!

    I assume you mean a Cessna 152.

If you are going to install an SL30, it will need its own dedicated CDI/HSI if it is to be used for IFR as the G5 HSI will only support the #1 Nav system, the GNS430W. The SL30 is a good Nav/Com and would be a good backup, but this is overkill for a C152 IMHO. For this class of aircraft I would consider a portable GPS or Ipad/ForeFlight and a hand held Com unit. A C152 is not a serious IFR platform IMHO, although I think it would be reasonable to use it for training.

    I agree with John.

But also, the Garmin 250XL is a VFR-only unit, so if your intent is to have it as a backup for IFR, then it won’t work for that purpose. Might as well just use an iPad.

Plus, it is really old and I doubt it’s supported in any way any more.

The SL30 is a better choice for those reasons alone.
