Untowered “line up and wait”

Asked by: 3351 views FAA Regulations

Hi everyone,

I have noticed a lot of pilots calling “line up and wait” at our local untowered airport. Ive never witnessed this before flying at this airport. Is this authorized procedure or is it in runway incursion territory? If its not authorized do you happen to know which regs or ACs apply?

Thanks! :)

Line up and wait (formerly Position and Hold) is an instruction given by a tower controller. There is no controller at an uncontrolled field.

Personal opinion: If you are not ready to go, you have no business sitting on the runway with your back to the final approach. If you are ready to go and the final is clear, taxi on the runway and go.

In AC 91-73B Appendix 1, paragraph 5, it states that “Pilots should not line up on the departure runway and hold any longer than necessary”.

91.13(b) could be brought to bear. It deals with careless or reckless operation of aircraft on the ground.

I agree 100% with Kris. Going onto the runway and sitting there has no place at a nontowered airport. Period. I cringe even when I see a pilot wait until on the runway before doing final takeoff checks.
