Training an international student with an F1 as a private instructor.

Hi all. Heres my situation.

I have an Chinese student who is authorized via a ERAU I-20 (F-1) who wants to complete his CFI. I took him from zero to Commercial Single in the past but it was with an authorized Part 141 which issued his F-1(former). Can this individual rent an aicraft and recieve training from me outside of ERAU? He is not enrolled in any aviation course under his current F-1. He is taking language courses.

If I can provide instruction, what are my requirements of him? (I.e., TSA, school authorization, etc)

Thank you.

Let me begin by saying I don’t know the answer to your question. Then let me follow that with some advice I was once given regarding foreign anything in aviation (certificates, students, pilots, aircraft). That advice was as soon as the word “foreign” enters the conversation, reach up and grab your hair and start pulling it out because eventually, that’s what you’re going to be doing. Schools like ERAU and FlightSafety have it down do a science, but for those of us who only hit it once in a while, it’s overwhelming.

However, my advice is to call AOPA and ask them. 1-800-USA-AOPA. Not to disparage anyone here, but thee folks at AOPA have it down to a science and they will never tell it to you wrong.
