(Commercial pilot, Air Force background, ATP AMEL) what’s easiest way to get ASEL rating?

Asked by: 2436 views General Aviation

All I want to do is fly VFR around the local airfield. I'm wondering what's required to get a SE Rating. My Dad turns 80 this year. He is a retired pilot with no medical and he hasn't flown in 18 years. I'd like to take him flying for an hour. Another time I would take my kids flying.

I'm wondering what's the most efficient way for me to get a SE rating? I've seen it recommended to take a SE ATP checkride. That may be the easiest way but what I really need is training in VFR procedures and recip engine aircraft familiarity.

What you are seeking is a class add-on.

I did this many years ago for an airline pilot. He had no single engine rating.

I reviewed the maneuvers for Private pilot (those were the privileges he was seeking, as are you). I signed off a 61.31(d) endorsement so he could act as PIC and practice the maneuvers.

I then flew with him again to check his performance. Everything was satisfactory, so I signed endorsements for 61.39(a)(6) and 61.64(c). He took the practical test and passed it.

That’s all there is to it.

Kris, did you mean 61.63(c) instead of 61.64(c)?

Yea, that’s what happens when typing at 6:30 a.m. just after waking up.
