Logging PIC

Asked by: 3346 views FAA Regulations, Private Pilot

Current ASEL pilot.  All to date time in C-152.  Club requires CFI check ride in C-172 prior to rental.

Check ride in C-172 1.0 hrs.

Can ASEL pilot log 1.0 PIC and 1.0 Dual for this check ride?  Does it matter if the C-172 was a PA-28 instead?

Thanks for the help. Instructor at the time said no PIC but yes for Dual.  Cleaning up my logbooks as I move electronic and want to make sure it is recorded correctly.

Yes. The instructor was incorrect. You certainly can log PIC and Dual on the same flight, that is normal for post-Private training. This ruling has been consistent for decades, and yet is still consistently misapplied, including by instructors.

Lots of other threads on this site and on the rest of the internet – literally thousands. Here’s one example which is similar-ish to your situation:

(I wish we could edit posts here.)

The relevant regulation is 61.51 (e):

    (e) Logging pilot-in-command flight time. (1) A sport, recreational, private, commercial, or airline transport pilot may log pilot in command flight time for flights-

    (i) When the pilot is the sole manipulator of the controls of an aircraft for which the pilot is rated, [stop, no need to go further for this question].

You are rated in ASEL airplanes. The 172 is an ASEL. That’s it!
