VFR Flight Planning

Asked by: 2460 views , ,

I am planning a VFR flight in a Piper Arrow and I plan to fly at 4500 MSL. How do I determine the True Airspeed so I can then do the rest of my flight log?  I know TAS is dependent on Temp and PA, but for flight planning do I change my TAS for the route to and from? Or is there a common planning TAS I calculate up front and use that for all planning.

Does your POH not include performance charts? Depending on what year of Arrow you are flying, it should have one that shows you TAS for given power settings and altitudes. You pick the altitude and power you want to fly at, and use the TAS it gives you.

Why would your TAS change on the to and from leg, unless you were flying at a different altitude or power setting?

If you’re flying an Arrow, I assume you are already a Private Pilot (though perhaps not, I did teach someone to fly in a Comanche). Either way, from your questions it seems like you might benefit from some additional ground instruction in cross country flight planning. Talk to your CFI, they will be able to help you clear up any misunderstandings pretty easily.
