How are airworthiness and registration certificates initially issued?

Asked by: 2758 views FAA Regulations

Let's say a person is buying a new airplane from an aircraft manufacturer. Will there be an AWC that comes with a purchased aircraft because the manufacturer went through the process? Or will the owner have to apply for an AWC after the purchase? Are the TCDS and AWC issued together? I assume the owner will have to obtain the RC after getting the aircraft unless the manufacturer processes the application through the FAA?

Yes, the airworthiness certificate comes with the airplane, unless it is experimental. Then you, the builder, have to apply for it. You may also apply for a replacement if the original becomes damaged or unreadable.

The TCDS is issued for the make/model of aircraft and is publicly available on http://www.faa.gov. It is not delivered with each aircraft.

The owner applies for the registration certificate. You need to present the bill of sale with the registration application.
