Identification of radio navigation aids

In an Answer that was provided on this website some time ago it was stated that VOR/DMEs transmit the VOR ident 3 times followed by the DME ident (a higher pitch) once.   On the audio panel of the plane that I fly there is a key called ‘DME’. Can this key be used as an alternative way to confirm that the DME is working when the DME is ‘on remote’ or should this key be used only when the DME is not ‘on remote’?

On a different aid identification subject I understand that all any radio navigation aids should be positively identified by listening to the morse code identifiers. Does this apply to ILSs as well? If so, ILSs should probably be identified on the final approach course, because the ILS signal is directional. Am I correct?

If the DME is connected to the audio panel, you should be able to hear it by selecting the DME button, assuming it exists.

For an ILS, you don’t need to be on the approach course centerline to identify the ILS, you just need to be within reception range. I can identify the ILS anytime I am within about 15 NM of the departure end of the runway. Standard service volume for the localizer is 18 NM.
