Part 141 Solo time

Asked by: 3149 views , , ,
Commercial Pilot, FAA Regulations, Flight Instructor

Can a pilot taking Part 141 training towards a commercial certificate fulfill his requirements for solo PIC in an airplane other than the flight school's aircraft?  Assuming the pilot has access to other aircraft (personally owned, PArt 61, flight club or Civil Air Patrol)?

Thanks.

I would say no for a couple of reasons.

First, the requirement in Appendix D is for “solo flight training”, not solo PIC. The school syllabus should outline the requirements for each lesson. There is a requirement for only 10 hours of solo flight training.

Second, there is a legal interpretation issued in 1992 to a Mr. Herr. The interpretation is not on the FAA’s web site, so I can’t provide a link. The interpretation requires that any aircraft used by a 141 school be either owned by the school or that the school has use of the aircraft as provided for in a formal agreement and that the aircraft be inspected by an FAA inspector.

If you are in for Part 141 you must finish all the lesson in the flight school
That’s why it sucks because once you are in 141 school there is no way out.

Unless you would like to change to part 61 but you can’t change back to 141
