CFI Passenger Currency

Asked by: 3301 views FAA Regulations, Flight Instructor

So we've talked about this for night currency:

What about day currency? Does this interpretation mean that a cfi never has to be current? I guess I should know that, but no one knows who I am so I don't mind having to ask.

Pilots don’t need to have day or night currency to act as PIC without any passengers aboard, but they must be current for day or night flight in order to carry passengers. A CFI may not carry passengers without being current for the type of flight. However, in the case of a CFI with a student pilot or a pilot receiving dual, neither is a passenger for the purposes of the currency requirement, so both may fly on a dual flight and neither have to be current since neither are passengers of each other. Only the pilot manipulating the controls may log the takeoff and landings for the purpose of currency. If there is a third person on board, then the pilot acting as PIC must be current for the flight. The pilot acting as PIC may be either the pilot receiving dual or the CFI.

Read the Schaffner interpretation. It states that the same logic used in my question concerning night currency applies to day currency.
