PAR test vrs PGL test

Asked by: 2430 views ,
FAA Regulations, Student Pilot

I have recently passed the PAR written test to obtain the Private Pilot Airplane certificate. I no longer want to spend time and money on the Private Pilot Airplane.  I now want to pursue the Private Pilot Glider certificate which requires passing the PGL written test.  I am of the understanding that if one holds the Private Pilot Certificate that they do not have to write the Private Pilot Glider test, PGL.  Is this true?  I would rather not spend the money on another test.

Very Respectfully, George Bergh

The short answer is if you have you private airplane you do not need to take another written test to get your private glider. I’ve heard this before at a gliding club I flew at. The best resource I can give you is a link to this website. It does not sound like you have your private airplane. Money wise it’s going to be the difference between spending another $150 for the glider written, or spending money on whatever training you need to finish your private airplane and then the hundreds the examiner will charge for the checkride. I’m at the end of the long answer I guess. If you do not want your private airplane, then it should save you hundreds to take the glider written and take that route. Thanks for the question George.

I failed to clearly state that I have not earned the Private Pilot Airplane certificate.

How far along are you in the powered airplane training? I’m sure you know that with your private airplane certificate and 40 hours pic you could do 10 solo flights in a glider and then go take the glider check ride.

I have 10 hours in SEL and with a difference of approximately $100 per hour the Glider is much more affordable. I am retired on a fixed income. George
