Aircraft’s position when reporting to the tower

Asked by: 2692 views Airspace, General Aviation

I'm a little confused about determining your aircrafts position "from/to" the airport and reporting the position.

Example: I T/O at rwy 160 and after I airborne I turned right and head 220. What will be my position report on the tower? South west of your station? Or should I check my LOP in vor to know what position will I report?

And how about let say I'm at cruising already and have a heading of 260 and I'm aproaching a new airport to my right. If I report to that station about my position, will I report west of your station or east? Thank you!

Let me ask you a question.

You are standing in front of your house (your position with respect to the house), facing it (your heading).

Now, spin around and face away from your house (180° change in heading) . Has your position with respect the house changed? Are you still in front of your house or have you transported somewhere else?

[Gosh! I sure hope you got that right!]

Now place a dot with a pencil on a sectional chart about 10 NM southwest of an airport. Now, use the pencil to draw an airplane heading directly toward the airport. Next, erase the airplane (leave the dot) and replace it with an drawing of an airplane heading in any other direction.

Do you see any change in the position of the airplane being southwest of the airport?r

I just want to know how will you see/know your position and report it to the tower. For example I have an airport to my left and in my magnetic heading is 360 (north) so I’ll report west of your station right?

    No, no. no,
If you see an airport to your left and you are flying north the airport is to your west and YOU are east of the airport. Report you are east of the airport.
Simply look at your DG. the airport is 270 and you are the reciprocal or 090

    Hope this helps

Finally. I was confused because we flew and approach one airport it was on our left but the other dude reported west of your station and the other day we passed again to that station but this time the station was on the right side and he report west again.
