Can I log this time?

Asked by: 3552 views , , ,
FAA Regulations, Private Pilot, Student Pilot

Hi there. I just recently got my private pilot license. I did a lot of training and flying before I got my license, so let's start there. When I had my student pilot certificate, I got the chance to fly in right seat in a Citation II for some hours. The pilot was a CFII and ATP. Can a log these flights as anything if I get the pilot to sign off in my logbook? Dual, X-Country, Total? Second, I flew with another pilot in a Baron. The pilot was commercial certified. Can I log this as anything? Next, I got my private pilot license and did those two same things with my PPL. Does that change anything?

Assuming that the Citation was certified for single pilot, the instructor could sign off the flight as training and the flight time can be logged as dual and count towards total time. Regardless if you are a student or a pilot rated for Aircraft Single Engine Land (ASEL), you are not rated in the Citation and can’t log any of the time as PIC.

In the case of the Baron, because I assume you are not rated for Aircraft- Multiengine Land, you can’t log any of the time as dual or PIC.

On the other hand, as a certified pilot with ASEL rating, you could log as PIC all the time you were the sole manipulator of the controls in a Bonanza assuming there was a rated pilot who could act as PIC for the flight, even if you did not have the high performance and complex endorsements. This is because the only criteria for logging based on being the sole manipulator of the controls is to be rated in the aircraft.

Great thank you. So ad far as the citation time goes, I can log as dual and total if my instructor is CFII and ATP. I do not believe he is MEI, so would that still be okay? Thanks

If the CFI was not also an MEI then you cannot log the time at all. They should know the rules and refuse to sign it as an instructor.
