Flying IFR with a CFII

Asked by: 3220 views Instrument Rating, Weather

I am a private pilot going for an instrument rating, however, while working on approaches, my instructor has cancelled the approach because of conditions at the airport that are less than VFR. I am under the hood during the whole approach. Are we not allowed to fly through the clouds? Even if the weather meets the minimums for the approach? My instructor was unsure and keeps making me do go arounds to avoid going through clouds, even when we haven't reach the Final Approach Fix.

It depends. You need to be operating on an IFR flightplan and clearance in order to fly below VFR minimums. The instructor pilot must be acting as PIC and be qualified to do so. It also depends on the trust the instructor has in your capabilities and his own to conduct the flight safely.

If your CFII is IFR-current and you are operating on an IFR flight plan there shouldn\’t be any problem. I logged about 6 hours of actual during my instrument training and I\’m very glad I did. Actual IMC (including heavy rain hitting the airframe, etc.) is very different from being under the hood.
