Flight Review-Wings Program

Does anyone recommend the Wings Proficiency Program over the Flight Review? I have put flying on hold to finish college so I am pretty rusty. I was thinking the Wings option would be better for someone like me who has not flown in 22 months. Thanks for any advice!

A flight review represents a single point in time. That point can be the minimum 1 hour and ground and 1 hour of flight on tasks selected by the CFI or it can be more. I think the FAA generally found that for many pilots, that means zero in the way of recurrent training, except for that single point in time once every two years. Some folks point to that as a reason for the poor safety rate in GA as opposed to commercial aviation.

The Wings option was designed to overcome that. Instead of a single point in time, it contemplates spreading out recurrent training over an extended period with multiple ground seminars and flight activities.

I personally like the Wings program but in your situation – self-described rust after almost 2 years of not flying, I think it’s a toss up and you would benefit just as much from an extended session(s) with a CFI who understands your situation and provides more than the minimum in a flight review as with Wings.

To avoid (or at least minimize) the rust in the future, you might start attending Wings seminars to keep your head in the game, and do a single Wings-qualifying session on a 4 or 6 month rotation and cover t=future FR requirements that way.
