Add a single engine rating to an ATP

Asked by: 16128 views
Commercial Pilot, FAA Regulations

I hold an ATP and have only flown multi engine (military and civilian). I would like to add a single engine to my ticket and would like some suggestions on the most efficient way to do this. If I understand the process correctly I should only require a check-ride in a single probably at the commercial level.

Thanks,

Note: I do not have an ATP.

But, the beginnings of your answer lie in FAR 61.165(e). As an ATP, you should be able to take it from there.

Also, if you want the single-engine category and class to be at the ATP level, you need to take an ATP check ride (one following the ATP PTS), not a check ride “at the commercial level.” However, if you only want commercial privileges in single-engine airplanes, you should be able to take a commercial check ride, whereupon your certificate will say “Commercial Privileges Airplane Single Engine Land.”

Actually with the type of flying you’ve been doing, you might be more comfortable going the single engine ATP route.
It is mostly a glorified Instrument flight. Also, if you’re going to be doing any Pt. 135, go with a Fed and get your authorization at the same time (it’s the same ride).
Finally, as I see you may not be a CFI, Pt. 61 ATP ratings are self recommended.

How many hour Dual Instruction flights/hrs would be required for either the ATP SE or Commercial SE cerification? I understand one of the biggest challenges is getting familiar with the SE aircraft you\\\’ll use for the checkride… just wondering if a CFI could endorse a pilot with a ATP ME license to fly solo for XXX days to gain more proficiency without added cost of a CFI onboard. Also, i know you need 50 hrs in SE type before you can take a ATP SE checkride… what is the minimum hours, if any, to take a Commercial SE checkride?
