Copies of current IFR plates?

I know that it it required to have the current text of graphical edition of IFR plates.  The official plates have extremely small print, especially when in turbulance, it can be very hard to read.  Is it legal to make copies of the current charts in order to make them larger and easier to read?  Would you need to at least have the offical chart accesable, or not need it at all.  This would also allow me to print off the charts I need for free, instead of having to buy the entire book just for a few charts.  Thanks!

You are requried to have current information available – but not in any particuliar format.  Enlarging charts by copy would be fine – if you’ll really worried – just make sure you include the date/edition stamp on the orginal 🙂

Yes you can do that legally. All you need is as Gary pointed out, the current information. Take a SID for example. Its very common for GA Pilots to forget to bring all the plates with them to an airport then suddenly get your clearance only to find out you must fly the SID. Well your ok if you don’t have it just get your description from the tower and you are legal! So then enlarging the format is acceptable as well.
