FAA Written test. Question Code PVT 535

Asked by: 7427 views Private Pilot, Student Pilot

My Question is:  On the Private Pilot written test Question PVT 535 asks, "What is the height of the lighted obstacle  approx. 6 NM SW of Savannah INT"  The Sectional excerpt given does not show the obstacle it refers to as being lit as on the sectional legend with the star burst at the top of the tower. The answer to the question is 1549 MSL Is it a given that any obstacle above a certain height is lit? There must be or the question is unfair and incorrect. Or the Chart I was supplied by King Schools in there learning material is wrong. That is highly unlikely as they got it from the FAA Test bank and supplied test aid reference material supplied with the test. I can't find anything that suggests that all tall obstacles are lit after a certain height. Could you direct me to a statement of that sort? Thanks, Ken

The current Private & Recreational computer testing supplement (PDF, enormous) is available online. I’m about to hit the road so I can’t look up the specific chart referenced, but unless you’re getting your information directly from the FAA it’s entirely possible that the prep material you used was out of date.

I checked this particular question in one of Gleim’s private pilot test prep books (a few years old, but the question is still the same). The obstruction 6 SW of Savannah *does* have the “star burst” symbol above it, but it is somewhat masked by the magenta of the Class C airspace.
