Checkride sign off

Asked by: 9654 views FAA Regulations, Flight Instructor, Instrument Rating

Hello,

I am a CFII. If a student already has all the endorsements for his instrument checkride from his instructor, but that instructor is not available, can I sign his IACRA?

Thank you.

If you look at the back of Form 8710-1 at the Instructor Recommendation, you will see the following language:

“I have personally instructed the applicant and consider this person ready to take the test.”

Have you personally instructed the applicant?
If not, how have you made the determination that he/she is ready to take (and pass) the test?

In order to sign the recommendation, whether IACRA or paper, you would need to be able to truthfully make the above statement.

Kris is correct as to whether you can sign the student off or not. I’m curious as to the former instructor being “not available” to sign someone off in IACRA. Since it’s on the internet, I’ve signed off students from 1000 miles away in a couple of circumstances. So unless the former instructor is deceased (my condolences if that’s the case) or temporarily living in some remote area, why wouldn’t they be available to sign the student off?

    Russ,
Fortunately the former instructor is not deceased. He was simply the primary instructor of the student and had already given the student all the required endorsements for the checkride. That instructor is currently on vacation and I am covering for him. The checkride was originally scheduled for when that instructor is supposed to be back, but the DPE asked if it can be done sooner. I did one review flight with the student and he seems well prepared, but the flight was less than 3 hours so I cannot give him the endorsement for 3 hours of flight training before a checkride. So basically I am asking if it’s ok for me to sign his IACRA while the endorsement are signed by the other instructor.
    Thanks.

Great! And that additional information is important. The endorsement doesn’t say that you have provided the 3 hours in the past 2 months, just that you have determined the applicant is ready for the checkride (see AC 61-65E). And from the applicants point of view, he’s not required to have the 3 hours with the same instructor, the requirement is just that he has the 3 hours from an authorized instructor – any authorized instructor.

So, as Kris states, if you deem the applicant is ready, you could indeed sign him off. Whether or not you’ve flown with him enough to be able to make that determination is for you to decide. Of course, if he doesn’t pass, that would now be against your record, if that’s important to you.

Personally, I’d call the regular instructor and see if he can get to a computer and sign him off, unless he’s on a cruise with no internet or something. If I was that regular instructor, I’d have absolutely no problem with that (and have done something similar).
