BFR without a Medical?

Asked by: 9392 views FAA Regulations

I am a CFI - Can I give a private pilot his BFR if his medical is expired? I know he can't fly as pic without his medical, but as long as I have mine shoudn't it be legal for me to give him his BFR?

I see no reason why you can’t give a flight review to a pilot who does not hold a current medical as long as you are fully qualified to be PIC for the flight (medical, currency, recency of experience, etc.)

I think It would be the same thing as giving a flight review to a pilot who has an expired BFR. A pilot needs both a current medical AND a current flight review to be able to act as PIC. You would just be fulfilling one aspect of those requirements. It’s up to him and the FAA to fulfill the other half (medical).

He also can log it as PIC as sole manipulator of the controls. You can log PIC as safety pilot and required crew. Any pilot can log the PIC time as long as they are flying aircraft they are rated for, single engine etc. AOPA had this very discussion and a quiz on the subject.
