Is a written endorsement needed in order to take the CFI written knowledge exam?

    You do not need an endorsement for the CFI knowledge test (AC 61.65).

    Note that you DO need an endorsement to take the Fundamentals of Instruction knowledge test if you need to take that test.

    The FAA does not require an endorsement to take the  FOI or any other Instructor Written exam.   You will need the logbook endorsement, however, before you take the practical for the CFI.
    I know from personal experience…I am an AGI working on the CFI right now.
