Lost Logbook

Asked by: 7177 views ,
Light Sport Aircraft, Student Pilot

I attended and completed a private pilot course while in college. I did the whole thing but the faa check ride.
I did not fly for more than 15 years.
I lost my log book.
I have transcripts indicating I completed the course.
How do I go about getting some credit in my new log book?
I am interested in starting again with the light sport aircraft cert.
Will the FAA fsdo help me with the log issue when I go in to get my lsa student cert?
Does the valid drivers license have to be issued from the current state of residence?

According to the FAA’s Inspector Handbook you should start with a signed, notarized document stating your flight time. This should be backed up with any documentation you have, and I would think transcripts from a college course would be pretty good evidence.

In theory that’s all you need (it says here). Your flight instructor should be able to help you figure out what you need to do to make sure the document path is clear when you present yourself for the appropriate checkride.

Personally, if you last flew 15 years ago you’ll probably accumulate the qualifying hours just getting ready for the checkride, but what do I know, you may be an aviation savant 🙂

A valid drivers license is a valid drivers license – but many (all?) states have a variety of rules about residence, drivers licenses and their validity, so you’ll want to make sure that your drivers license REALLY is valid and not just “not expired”, which isn’t quite the same thing.

That should be a reminder to us all to go make a current photocopy of our logbooks….

I learned way back in the beginning ~ to always always always make a very good quality photocopy of all logbook pages. I prefer doing it in color.
I am never cavalier about leaving my logbook around in a bag, in my car, on a table – You can also scan the pages of your logbook into a computer. ANd I alwasy prefer using blue ink when signing things since a color copy shows it to be an original – and not a ‘xerox’ copy where signatures are concerned.

It’s possible that your school may have some records, but you need to have that document that you finalize, notarized and signed.
