Entry into class D under class B airspace

Asked by: 7867 views Airspace, FAA Regulations, Private Pilot

Hello,  I am a low time private pilot (VFR).   Most of my training occurred in class G & E airspace with limited training in class C and D.

Later this spring I plan on making a trip from Sanford ME (KSFM) down to Beverly MA (KBVY).  KBVY is in class D airspace up to 2600' and underlies the Boston Class B which is 3000' to 7000' above KBVY.    If I were to fly in from the north at 2500'  would I still need to contact Boston Approach to get clearance into the Bravo airspace at the 20nm ring or could I just contact the KBVY tower at 10 miles for clearance directly into their class D airspace since I'm under the 3000' shelf?

Without the experience of knowing, I'd probably contact BOS and have them tell me I didn't need to, rather than not contact them and find out I should have.

Don’t bother with Boston approach. I routinely fly under O’Hare’s Class B and don’t call approach. If I need to go through the Class B, I just call the tower (helicopters operate differently).

As you noted, Class B begins at 3,000 and you will be at 2,500. Just contact the tower. (Technically, they don’t clear you into their airspace. You just need two way radio communication to enter).

You only need bravo clearance to enter bravo. If you’re at 2999 or 7001 you do not need a clearance for that area. You only need a bravo clearance if you plan to enter the airspace, which means flying both within lateral and vertical limits.

As you are flying into Beverly ( KBVY ) which is Class D airspace up to 2500ft. Boston Class B Floor is 3000ft. You do not have to contact Boston Approach. You just have to Esteblish Contact with Beverly tower, after tuning ATIS for airfield info, about 10-15 miles out announcing intentions to land there.
