3rd class medical paperwork question

Asked by: 4162 views , , , ,
FAA Regulations, Student Pilot

I received my 3rd class medical today after having to do additional paperwork for a condition that required special review. The correspondence included a cover letter, a photocopy of my 3rd class medical/student pilot certificate, and an envelope addressed to the FAA service center that did the medical review. My question is do I sign the photocopied certificate and mail it back to the FAA in the provided envelope? Does the FAA issue an original certificate? The cover letter only discussed the medical review and my extended medical care plan and the respective FAA regulations. Nothing was mentioned about sending anything back to their service center. Just looking for some answers. I do have my case managers direct line that I could call next week if that is necessary to find the answer, just curious.

Thanks,

-JR

I also have a special issuance medical. The envelope is not to send a copy of the current one, it’s to send in the renewal paperwork if required. For example, my special issuance requires an annual review. On my 3rd class medical, it says not valid after xxx date (which is 1 year before the medical certificate expires). About 60 days before that date I have to get my primary physician to provide a a copy of my blood tests/lab results and a narrative of my condition. I then use that envelope to send it to Oklahoma City for review. They then issue a new medical certificate for the following year.

JR, I would contact a pilot examiner or the FAA for a special question like yours. Good luck!
