Digital Logbook signitures, how to apply them

Asked by: 3892 views ,
FAA Regulations, Flight Instructor, General Aviation

I started using a digital logbook (Excel) a couple years ago and whenever I receive training that I need/want a signiture from the dual given to me, I pull out my paper logbook and capture it there as well. I would like to be able to stick to Excel, what is a good method to have a signiture captured (or signiture equivelent)?

I take a picture of the sig (endorsement) with my camera and upload it to the digital logbook…

Unless you’re just scanning and either linking or pasting the scan in Excel, you’ve come upon one of the current limitations in digital logbooks, the capture and, more importantly, authentication of signatures of other people.

The FAA does not have much guidance on the subject but a number of vendors (both free and pay) have come up with what may be viable methodologies. For example, with the free MyFlightBook, a subscriber instructor can be set up to “sign” a subscriber student’s logbook.

There are a number of generally accepted authentication methods floating around but I’m personally a bit conservative about such things and I’m not quite sure how an instructor would provide an authenticated digital signature for your excel spreadsheet. So, while I now rely on a digital logbook for everything else, I choose to continue to use my paper log for recording events that require someone else’ signature (and I scan endorsements for flight reviews and the like).
