CFI & CFII ground and Flight training minimum

Asked by: 6239 views General Aviation

Why many flight schools offer much less ground and flight hours in their Part 141 CFI/CFII training programs than the minimum FAA CFI/CFII training requirements? Note: 1. the FAA Part 141 requires 40 hrs ground and 25 hrs flight training for the CFI. and 2. 15 hrs ground and 15 hrs flight training for the CFII (these are the MINIMUM required by the FAA)

Lion, if you take a closer look, I think you’ll find that, although they have Part 141curricula available, they do their CFI training under Part 61 and the numbers you mention are based on that.

There are no FAA required minimums for the CFI or CFII under part 61. I went through a 141 flight school for all my fixed wing training but only did my PPL and IR part 141. My commercial and CFI were done part 61 and I got the CFI practical sign off when my instructor felt I could take the test, no hour requirement.

My point is that just because it is a 141 school does not mean that ALL the training is done 141. The CFI and II are easier to just go 61 with no hourly restrictions, so those numbers you see are more than likely that school’s hourly average.
