There are lots of ways to start home study for learning to fly. All of the resources I’ll mention are oriented around American rules and regulations, but should still have some applicability to flying anywhere. If you’re planning to learn to fly outside of the U.S., tell us where and maybe someone will have some region appropriate tips.

First, there are several FAA resources that are a good conerstone:
    The Airplane Flying Handbook
    Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge
The FAR/AIM (Federal Aviation Regulations / Aeronautical Information Manual)

Each of these three can be downloaded from the FAA website in PDF format, or purchased in bookstores. The latter is very dense, but the book version includes a study guide that will highlight which sections are particularly relevant to a student pilot.

There are also a lot of people producing content for student pilots on the Internet either for purchase or for free. The following are some that come to mind.
    King Schools (http://www.kingschools.com/)
    Sporty’s Aviation (http://www.sportys.com/COURSES)
    Jason Schappert’s MzeroA (http://www.m0a.com/)
http://www.pilottrainingsolutions.com (created by a gentleman who posts on this site regularly)

There are, of course, plenty of others out there as well. I used Sporty’s video courses for IFR training, which I enjoyed, but some people prefer different training courses.

The final one I’ll offer is an online only ebook that I just love called See How It Flies. The author is a CFI and has aeronautical engineering expertise, and pulls it all together in a really practical way for experienced and student pilots. It can be found here: http://www.av8n.com/how/
