Privledges of Private Pilot License

Asked by: 4759 views Private Pilot

Can I fly  Cessna 152 or piper archer without flying it before, because I got my PPL in a Cessna 172. I know rules say  a Private Pilot can fly an airplane without instructor endorsement is the airplane is not high performance or complex.

It depends, what does your certificate say? If it says Private SEL, then you can fly any SEL, except for the specific exceptions, like high-performance, complex, high-altitude, and tailwheel.

Now, is it smart to just jump into a totally new aircraft without any instruction? No. Will most, if not any, rental places and insurance companies gonna allow it? No. Do yourself a service and go get a bit of instruction first.

You are able to fly an aircraft that meets the category and class of your certificate restricting that list to whatever aircraft you have the proper endorsement for. If you learned to fly a Cessna 172, you can LEGALLY fly a Piper Warrior, Cessna 152, Grumman Tiger, Vans RV-6A, etc.

Along with what Jim said, just because it’s legal doesn’t make it safe! Any rental company should require a checkout. As for insurance, often times for single engine fixed tricycle gear aircraft, the only stipulation is a Private certificate. In that case, it would not be required to get a checkout, just a really great idea.
